About

Hi, my name is RJ. I live in Calgary with my wife and two kids. Born in The Netherlands, I moved to Canada in 2006. I love biathlon, cross-country skiing, canoeing, and biking. I also have a passion for data analysis & visualization and learning more about anything that interests me.

After blogging for numerous years about hockey and other sports, I have been running Biathlon Analytics since 2020. In 2021 I started my own consulting company, Weise Analytics, which now encompasses Biathlon Analytics. And in 2022 Jordan and I started the Penalty Loop podcast.

What I can offer you

With over 20 years of experience in data & spatial analysis and visualization, I love the power of innovative and visual storytelling. Nothing gets me more excited than creating visuals that show evidence (data) based information in language easily understood by the intended audience. A positive user experience always being my main priority, the visuals allow my clients to absorb information and make the best-informed decisions faster.

I typically work with: Tableau PublicGravit designer (now Corel Vector), Procreate, Q-GIS, MongoDB, and R.

what you will find here

The purpose of this website is to share my biathlon research, data analysis, design & visualization, and make them easily accessible to all viewers. I also offer my services here if you would like to work with me on biathlon-data-related projects (check the Triggers page). And you will also find other items related to biathlon, like SKOOT, a DIY biathlon board game, some of my work on Tableau Public, and even some art.

Some of my content has also made it into the IBU’s Biathlon Insider. I encourage you to sign up to automatically receive it in your mailbox! And a lot of my work can be found on my Tableau Public page (link below).

chatting about biathlon

Jordan (@penaltyloop) and I have a weekly conversational podcast in which we do our best to break down the world of biathlon, review IBU events (primarily the World Cup) and news, and discuss items that we think will be interesting for all biathlon fans. Although we aim to provide an English biathlon podcast with an emphasis on athletes from the Americas, we have interviewed many athletes and coaches from Europe as well. Rather than going through the race results, we try to look at things that stood out and take a unique spin on interviewing athletes and other guests in the summer months.
